Who was Matt Champy?

Postby IrishPride » Tue Sep 06, 2005 5:34 am

Ok I've looked over the forums before for this, and I never found a straight answer. Who was Matt Champy, and what was his story?

Anyone know?

From what I know, he was supposedly the 4th member of HOP, but died in the early stages when the group was forming. Other than that I dont know anything else.

Symbolically, the casket being carried into the church (During the House of Pain Anthem, seen in certain edits of the Jump Around video) is Matt Champy if you ask me. Never read or heard that, but I'm pretty sure that's what they were going for.

The 4-man crew/With the Irish brew- Woulda loved to hear Champy on just one cut, see what his rhymestyle was like.

Matt Champy was sadly taken from us one night when he and a couple friends (not any members of HOP) were doing 'Whip-it's' in an automobile in a parking lot and he was taken by carbon minoxide poisoning.

For your information, Whip-its are small containers of nitrous oxide and they are legal to sell. They're used in pellet guns, whipped cream canisters and remote control race cars.

Drug experts say the Whip-its -- filled with nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas -- are also popular with teens for getting high.

The gas can be lethal.

Still sadly missed. RIPMC

I've heard some rumours like that too, but I never got the confirmation on them. Thanks for the clearance! 8)

I recieved an interesting e-mail some time ago (Jan 7th), and after getting a permission from the sender, I will now post the message here. The mail gives details about Matt and his contribution in HoP & his death. This is what Mike wrote:

Hi,

I had spotted some posts regarding "Who was Matt Champy?" on your board.

Matt Champy was my cousin and he was Danny Boy's best friend for many years.
I think they had known each other since high school or maybe even junior
high. Matt was actually friends with all the guys in HOP but especially Danny.
I've read several places that Matt was a founding member of HOP, but that's not
really correct. He hung out with the guys, but HOP had already been signed
by a label and were getting started when Matt died in March 1992.

QoolQeith on your board had it pretty close as far as how Matt died, but
here's the story: he had gone with 2 friends out to the Troubador in Hollywood
and a couple of other clubs. One of the friends was able to swipe a cannister
of nitrous oxide from Northridge Hospital (I think he worked there part-time or
something). They went to a convenience store where Matt took a small bag of
baloons. Doing nitrous is similar to filling baloons with helium and sucking
the helium out, and it gives a minor high. They parked the friend's truck at
the side of the road nearby, started getting high with the windows rolled up.
They left the valve of the nitrous off, and the cab of the truck filled
completely with nitrous. They all passed out/fell asleep, and they all three died.
The truck was found the next morning. Matt was 21.

I think the other guys from HOP were at the funeral but I don't remember. I
know Danny Boy was there because he and I were both pall bearers. The story
made all of the local papers and news programs and started a big movement about
the dangers and availability of nitrous oxide, especially since it had been
considered a relatively safe high. The fact that Matt and Danny Boy were
friends didn't really get any attention at the time because HOP hadn't hit it big
yet.

Mike

I personally want to thank Mike for his post and clearance, I really appreciate it. I'm sure all you guys do too.

Yes indeed. Good to have the story on that piece of history. Thanks much to both of you!
